Tripping arcadia review6/26/2023 Unlike many other novels in this genre that tend to resort to queerbaiting, the sapphic subplot to the story is genuine and refreshing. This novel is incredibly difficult to put down and does not disappoint with its many twists and turns before revealing a most satisfying conclusion. The plot is an almost non-stop fever-dream full of glittering and elaborate parties for the wealthy and debauched, deadly familial subterfuge, righteous revenge, and ultimately death. After fruitlessly searching for employment to help her struggling working-class Bostonian family, she lands a position with the famously wealthy Verdeau family to aid in taking care of the mysteriously ailing oldest son, Jonathan. The novel follows Lena, a med school dropout with a background in medieval poisons thanks to her academically inclined Italian aunt. Not only did the first chapter entrance me with luscious writing that feels like silk on skin, top shelf liquor, and gold flakes, but also I was intrigued by this secret elite. Mayquist is stunning in their rendition of the standard gothic plot think Masque of the Red Death meets Jane Eyre splashed with a tinge of proletariat revenge. The entirety of Tripping Arcadia has a reflective quality about it, like Lena is telling us the story afterwards. Tripping Arcadia is a deliciously twisted gothic novel with a sapphic subplot that leaves the reader dazed and delirious in the most wonderful way.

However, that has nothing to do with the fact that it was an outstanding film in every way. If the creators' intent was to let the world get to know Andy Kaufman the man, then I think the film missed its mark. I now know a lot about what he did, but I still know very little about who he was. Though interesting throughout, mostly because it explained so much that I never knew about events that were so highly publicized, Man on the Moon's amazing insight into the "why" behind the "what" of his antics completely left out the "why" behind the "what" of the person. The entire supporting cast was just as stellar. This time, I forgot that I was watching an actor portraying Andy Kaufman. His normal on-screen presence has often made it hard for me to see him as the characters he's played. I'm not any more of a Kaufman fan than I've been, but Man on the Moon has left me with an incredible appreciation for his genius. I was never a big fan of his off-Taxi antics, but then again, Man on the Moon made it clear that I simply did not understand them. Having liked the contrived Latka Gravas, but never really knowing much more about Andy Kaufman than the Headlines, Man on the Moon offered some incredible depictions of this one of a kind enigma.

The killer inside me book summary6/25/2023 Look, I am not one of these readers who ask for scientific accuracies in Science-Fiction, but even me have a hard time accepting fantastical explanations in contemporaries. Did I mention that I was no Sherlock? Me guessing almost everything at 25% shouldn't happen in a Thriller. Twists there aren't, but rather long, laborious passages in which I know what's happening and the MC just can't FIGURE IT OUT. Not to be mean or anything, but I feel a little baffled by the fact that I'm supposed to acknowledge the existence of twists in there. You almost tricked me in the beginning, but soon it became clear that I'd entered a magical place where somehow, I am Sherlock (I am not). ► Let's have a minute of silence dedicated to everything that was missing in The Killer in Me, okay?

He often sat in on trials, but never felt the urge to become an attorney. Guterson was intrigued by the narrative of his father's cases. Guterson credits many influences on his writing, beginning with his father, Murray Guterson, a distinguished criminal defense lawyer: His father's example taught him first and foremost to choose a career he would love, which also meant making positive contributions to the world. Like many great writers before him, David Guterson draws on the rich local culture of the Pacific Northwest for inspiration in creating unforgettable characters and settings. Currently-lives on Bainbridge Island in Puget Sound,ĭavid Guterson is the author of a collection of short stories, The Country Ahead of Us, the Country Behind Family Matters: Why Homeschooling Makes Sense Snow Falling on Cedars, which won the 1995 PEN/Faulkner Award, the Pacific Northwest Bookseller Association Award, and was an international bestseller and the national bestseller East of the Mountains.Education-M.A., University of Washington.

Happiness becomes you6/24/2023 Most people understand karma to be about good or bad, when it’s actually more about cause and effect. That light is within us all, and accessible to us all. They encouraged my dreams and helped me see that the power, the light, behind whatever success and happiness I could achieve was already within me. Later on I was fortunate to find good friends in my neighborhood chanting group who supported me and taught me about changing my karma. So listening to my instincts was all I could do to get by. I had no one else to rely on for the first 30 years of my life. But even before I learned about chanting, I always tried to listen to my instincts, to my heart, and follow that inner source of wisdom. It’s true that I’m no stranger to adversity! Fortunately, my spiritual practice has helped me to heal those wounds and see my life, and myself, clearly. You beautifully describe how your practice of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo has helped you cope with each challenge. Was there anything else that helped you-and how? You also talk about overcoming loss, from abandonment as a child to the premature death of loved ones and abusive relationships. This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from. |
